Years ago a business owner asked me to find a better backup solution for him. His troubles were
- staff turnover and inadequate cross training of backup duties
- risk of loss due to lack of consistent backup
- a broken backup tape drive and his lack of time to deal with it
I did the research. I found out that online backup had come of age and compared several options. I tested one, but it failed to work with the odd operating system version my client had. I found another and thoroughly tested it. It worked well consistently. So I implemented it for him.
Problem Solved
Another business owner, a tax and accounting person, had me review his backup. I showed him that nothing had been backing up even though his system had been telling him it completed each morning. He was at total risk of losing everything.
I implemented the same online backup solution for him. It is a good thing - within the next year, he had a loss of an entire folder of many files. He was able to restore the folder from the online backup system (of course he called and we helped him through it - at no charge for our time). Here are his words of endorsement:
Problem Solved
Concierge level service vs. mass automated impersonal service
- telephone calls are welcome
- the option to share screens is available
- traditional email support is also offered
- if the support request is reasonable, we will do it
On-site and Off-site backup with the same software
All file types are supported
- specialized server database file types
- workstation files
Backup snapshots of almost any frequency
- multiple times per day
- daily
- weekly
- monthly
- yearly
- any combination of the above
- or,if you prefer, manual start instead of automated scheduled backup
Retention of snapshots for almost any period you might consider
- a certain number of days
- a week
- a month
- a year
- more than a year
- or even by number of backups performed vs. by time
Unlimited backup sets, each with its own settings (most services do not provide that ability)
Very advanced settings
- file filtering, by exclusion, by inclusion, or both
- pre-backup and post-backup command lines
- VMware and ShadowProtect support
Overnight shipping of external hard drives for seed loads and restores of large backup sizes, which is useful for exceptionally large total storage needs.
Split restores option (our own creation, it is a unique service option) - which is useful for exceptionally large total storage needs; urgently needed files are restored immediately (unless a single server database is unusually large), then important encrypted files are shipped by external hard drive overnight, and then, for files that would take days to transmit over the Internet, the remaining files are shipped overnight as soon as the remaining encrypted files finish being copied to the external hard drive(s).
Seed load and restore service at no additional expense, including the split restores option. Some charge a huge amount: Mozy - Data Shuttle Service ranges from $275 to $575 (from http://mozy.com/pro /server/pricing/ 06-13-2013); CrashPlan - Restore-To-Door service costs $164.99 (from crashplan.com/ consumer/restore-kit.vtl 06-13-2013)
Extensive documentation guides for users and technicians (much more detail, with screenshots, and more useful than others offer).
Complimentary doubling of storage space while needed for upgrades and replacements of servers or workstations
Granular restore from an Exchange email server backup of just a mailbox, or just the Contacts of one mailbox, or even just the Calendar of one mailbox, which can prevent the loss of a current day's mail; of course, our software also can allow restore of a full Exchange database, which is what other services do
Unlimited training and support at no additional expense with the end user or even the end user's local delegated information technology service provider
Only high level certified technical support
24 / 7 / 365 support, with rare exceptions
Trial account without any credit card or other personal or business information
Your choice of invoice method(s)
- PDF by email
- FAX
- postal mail
- or any combination
Payment by most any means and terms
- credit card
- company check
- personal check
- PayPal
- monthly
- quarterly
- semi-annual
- annual
Two easy user interfaces - software agent and web page
File restore at will and without limits, all included at no additional charge
Roll back to older versions of files; some services do not, which means that just one night of a bad file not being noticed will result in a good file being overwritten by the bad one (a Carbonite customer came to us after just such an event)
Even though separated from the pack by so much, like some others . . .
Our software works with all of these operating systems
- recent Windows Server versions
- recent Windows Workstation versions
- recent Macintosh versions
- recent Linux versions
- recent UNIX Solaris/AIX/HP-UX/FreeBSD versions
Backs up files on Windows operating systems even if the file is open or in use.
Backup types include full, incremental, and differential
Quality daily reports by email that confirm backup results and status - in both executive summary form and also in detail for technicians - to the end user and / or a delegated technical support company
